The Worship Workshop: Pelham Results

The first-ever Worship Workshop was held yesterday, June 19th, in Pelham, Alabama, at The Holiday Inn on Cahaba Valley Road. Participants received .55 RID CEUs and we had a full day of learning how to best incorporate ASL into song signing.

Listed below is every comment we received on our evaluations at the end of the day:

What IS The Worship Workshop???

Folks have been asking..."so really, what IS The Worship Workshop"? What will it look like? What will we do?

Briefly, I think Eugenia said it best...

The Worship Workshop is to teach various praise and worship songs that incorporate ASL. The instructors plan to have various songs prepared at different levels so we can match the participants skill level related to signing. We plan to guide the participants through the process with each song to include making decisions regarding the song choice, the sign choice, props, placement, etc. The participants will leave with a knowledge of how it's done, step by step, with 3 songs in their arsenal, and experience performing (or performance interpreting) on the stage in front of an audience. The 3 songs will be taught by 3 different instructors, who each have passions in different areas.

Presenter Biographies

Steve Austin is no stranger to the Deaf community or the stage. A Nationally Certified Educational Interpreter, Steve has completed multiple certifications in record time. Since 2009, he has passed the Florida QA (3.0), the NIC Written, the EIPA Performance (4.4), the EIPA Written, the SLPI (Advanced Plus), and fast-tracked his way through Sorenson VRS's VI-P training.

Steve has been performing in church and community theater since age five,
and was drawn to American Sign Language due to the visual nature of the language. Rising to the challenge of incorporating ASL into musical and dramatic performance interpreting is one of Steve's greatest passions.

During his freshman year at the University of Montevallo, Steve was fully immersed into Deaf culture and ASL by being blessed with a big "D" Deaf roommate. Steve was honored to be accepted into Gallaudet University's prestigious Hearing Undergraduate Program at age nineteen. At age twenty-one, he graduated from a two-year ministry school. During his tenure there, he traveled the globe performing and ministering in high schools, churches, and the inner city.

Steve is now nearing completion of a Bachelors of Interpreting through
Troy University. He has been interpreting professionally for the past two years, and in churches for over a decade.

Aside from interpreting, Steve is an avid photographer (with more than fifty weddings in his portfolio) and plays the piano. His favorite times are spent outdoors with his sweet wife, Lindsey. Most recently, Steve has been invited to be the guest Children's Pastor for the Deaf at the 2010 Shocco Springs Camp. A workshop with Steve Austin promises to be informative, engaging, and handfuls of fun!

Eugenia Vanderpool Truman is a Nationally Certified Interpreter, soccer mom (the kind that yells), mother of a 6th grade daughter (the kind that yells), mother of a pre-school daughter (the kind that yells) and wife of a Deaf husband (who is happy all the time because he cannot hear the yelling). Eugenia drives her SUV (nota mini-van!) to her interpreting assignments in the community, to the Sorenson Video Relay office, to interpret at church, or to where ever a bunch of children need to be taxi-ed. She began her professional career as a high school teacher at the Alabama School for the Deaf. After being in Deaf Education for almost a decade, Eugenia is now enjoying the flexibility interpreting offers. Previously, Eugenia taught for several years through Columbus State University's Continuing Education program in Columbus, GA. Her classes included Community ASL, Baby Sign, and Praise and Worship ASL. While in Columbus, Eugenia was selected by the Mayor's Committee for the Frances M. Duncan Award for her service in the disability community. Eugenia is currently working on ASLTA certification. Since moving back to the Birmingham area a few years ago, (where she grew up), Eugenia and her family have the "Kool-Aid House" - where everyone is welcome to stop by. When she's not interpreting, checking homework, cheering at a soccer game, or having a tea party, Eugenia loves to casually entertain friends and family at her home. And if she's missing from the Worship Workshop- check the beach. It's one of her favorite places to be!

Sue Graham has been an RID Certified Interpreter for the Deaf for over 35 years. Daughter of Deaf Parents, Granddaughter of Deaf Grandparents, Sue the product of several family and extended family members who are Deaf. She began her career at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind and began teaching Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Sign Language Classes at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1977. Sue was the founder and director of a musical sign language group, Handful of Love, and appeared on several national network programs including CNN news, the Toni Tennille Show and was nominated for a Cable ACE Award. Sue has also been recognized for her outstanding community work such as sign language consulting and interpreter coordination at UAB's Town and Gown Theatre and was named Woman of the Year by the Birmingham Business Women's Association. She also was awarded a life time achievement award by the Women of AT&T.

Sue worked for several years in the establishment of Relay Services for the Deaf in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia and opened the Connie Reasor Deaf Resource Center in Norton, Virginia. Sue currently works at Sorenson Communications as the manager of the Birmingham VRS Center and is working on a Master's degree in Theology.

Sue lives in Sylacauga, Alabama with her husband and their 5 rescued dogs and one cat. Sue enjoys her 4 grandchildren and loves to scrapbook.

Darrell Revel began his acting career at age eight. He has gone on to become an accomplished playwright, director, poet, lyricist, actor, mime, magician, make-up artist, puppeteer, ventriloquist, technical director, scenic artist, lecturer, author and educator. He has 15 years classroom experience teaching Speech, Theatre, and English at the High School and college levels. Revel has 19 years experience with the Alabama State Council on the Arts & Humanities as an Artist-in-Residence. Darrell began losing his hearing during college, and is now profoundly deaf. As a late deafened adult, Darrell and his family have been learning American Sign Language and creating friendships in the Deaf community. His numerous achievements include: two time recipient of the John Gassner Playwrighting Award, Director of the Year by Alabama Educational Theatre Association, and the Nobel recipient for Distinguished High School Educator. Revel has over 600 radio, television, film and stage credits, including three years on Broadway. Married to choreographer Annemarie Bird for 25 years, Revel lives in Helena, Alabama, where his youngest daughter is a 6th grader. His other daughter is a Junior at Savannah College of Art and Design. Currently, Darrell is in the middle of a 34 performance tour of his one-man Mark Twain show for the Alabama Public Libraries’ “Big Read” initative.

There are a few options for workshops:

Friday night (6:30pm to 8:30pm) and Saturday (9am to 4pm, with 6pm "recital")

Saturday only (9am to 4pm)

Weekend workshop (Friday and Saturday workshops PLUS Sunday "Deaf Day" at host church)

These workshops are $35/person or groups of 15 or more have a discounted rate of $25/person
